We recommend having your tank cleaned every 3 to 5 years depending on the size of your system and your household.
Get The POOE2 On The Job
We have an 11 tonne vacuum truck called the POOE2 on the road servicing the whole Wairarapa Valley. We can clean septic tanks, grease traps, sumps, truck washes and remove wine waste for vineyards. Working in the Wairarapa for over 25 years means we have an extensive database of tanks, so even if you don’t know when your tank was last cleaned – chances are, we will. So give us a call today to talk about your options or if you have more questions about your system check out our Tank Care page.
When We Come to Clean
There are some simple things you can do to make sure the cleaning process is simple and seamless.
Dig the lids off
We do multiple tanks a day, if it’s easy for us to get to yours then that reduces time spent at your job and consequently also the cost. In new tanks your lids may be at ground level but in older systems they will require a spade.
Check your access
Sometimes tanks are located across lawns or paddocks or at the end of overgrown driveways. Our truck can weigh up to 19 tonnes. We don’t want to sink into your paddock and we bet you don’t either. We will ask you more about your access on the phone but it helps us if you know where it is and how far it is from solid ground.
Lock up your animals
We want our driver Steve to feel safe when he’s out and about. If you have dogs or stock we ask that they are kept securely away from anywhere he will need to access. You don’t need to be on-site for us to clean your tank but you’re also welcome to come and see how it’s done.
Answers to Your Questions
How often should I clean my tank?
We recommend that you clean it every 3 – 5 years depending on the size of your tank and the number of people in your household.
How can I look after my septic system?
It’s good to think of your septic tank as a living thing, it’s the good bugs in here that break down waste so if you put harsh chemicals down the drain you kill the bugs.
How long does it take?
A simple tank clean for a normal system will take around an hour plus travel time. You can speed the process up by having the lids dug off or exposed before we get there.
What products should I use?
We recommend using products that are septic tank safe, you can check labels to see if they are septic or grey water safe. In our personal household we use all Eco-Store products which are readily available from most grocery stores.
There is a smell coming from my system.
A smell generally signifies that your system isn’t happy and this could be for a number of reasons. You may be flushing your system too frequently by putting too much water through it, or you may have killed the good bugs in your system which need to be re-kindled with a new starter like live yoghurt. It may also be a sign that it’s time to clean your tank, if it hasn’t been done in the last 3-5 years then give us a call to book the truck.
